Ava's Quilt
I definitely, most certainly have my sewing 'sewjo' back again. Here is another quilt that I have nearly finished - just got a few more squares to hand quilt.
I just love this quilt - so very feminine. The main fabric that I used was a Liberty of London and I am hand quilting in a perle 8 thread.
A lot of people ask me how do I pick fabrics for a quilt - well, the way that I do it is - I pick one favourite fabric that I absolutely love the colours in and then just keep adding til I have the mix just right. So in this case, it was the gorgeous Liberty of London - I just added pinks, creams, chocolates, and raspberry colours to the mix - and this is what I came up with.
So how do you pick your fabrics when you make a quilt? I would love to know!!!
I just love working at Amitie and seeing all the gorgeous combinations of fabrics that people put together. It is very inspiring - I think that I am very conservative in my choosing of fabrics and colours, - but I am working on that and I will try new things, but I guess you have to use what you feel most comfortable with.
This quilt is for a little baby called Ava. Her mummy was 'flower girl' at my wedding 21 years ago!!! She is very special.

Simply stunning, Cathy! It's beautiful and I love your fabric combinations.
I love your fabric choices Cathy.
I tend to choose mine in a similar way ... although sometimes, by the time I've picked and swapped and changed, the original fabric is no longer in the mix.
And if all else fails, I grab an Amitie staff member for some creative advice. It really helps to have someone who is familiar with all the fabrics in the shop who can say "have you thought about this one over here in the back corner?"
Andi :-)
beautiful, beautiful, beautiful...you are a color wizard.
I was gobsmacked when the photos opened up on this post!! This is the most gorgeous quilt Cathy. The colours are superb! so so so very beautiful!
Just beautiful Cathy! I chose my fabrics from ranges at times, but mostly by going through my scraps and seeing what works for me. Inspiration from the beautiful work from bloggers helps too!
You have an award, check out my blog to accept it!
It's beautiful!!!
The fabrics you picked look just perfect together. I find picking fabrics the hardest part of making a quilt!
Dreamy! The colour combination is really special, as are the prints. Great to hear about how you choose which ones - although you clearly have an excellent eye for doing so!
Oh Cathy... it's so beautiful. All my favourite patterns and colours in one quilt... yay for your sewjo! xx
Wow, that is a very pretty quilt. I just saw the fabric yesterday at a store and it is even better IRL. I was so tempted to buy some but at $45 a metre I have to rethink.
Just gorgeous - love that Liberty fabric.
Lucky little Ava - it's beautiful Cathy!
Love the pink, raspberry and brown colour scheme! Another beautiful quilt - perfect for a little girl.
It's so beautiful..I want to make something like that in chocolate brown tones to snuggle up on the couch. I'll take your advice and start collecting fabrics.
What a delightful quilt. Very luxurious with a bit of Liberty Print!
Thats just lovely - I have to admit Hub tends to end up choosing my colour schemes, I pick up things and he just changes them all and they always look better too!!

The quilt is just lovely.
I wish I followed a scientific method of fabric selection. Mine is just - if it looks good throw it in!
Great combo of patterns there. Just brilliant.
I tend to always go for such bright colours and never pale. That's my aim for the next quilt - go for pastel/pale!
Gorgeous fabric combinations, Cathy! I love the spots with those Liberty florals.
I don't really have much of a stash so usually the birth of the fabric choices for a quilt entail stepping into the shop and finding something that strikes my fancy. I might have an idea of the color or value that I think I want to start with but generally I start with a piece I like and then build coordination off of it.
I choose my colours in a similar way to you, most of the time.
Sometimes I start with an idea of the decor it is to fit in with though.
If it is for a family member, I have colour palettes that I associate with them that I tend to start with. My youngest daughter gets lots of lavender, with apple green, peach and cinnamon for example.
I would love to work in a patchwork shop and help people with their colours.
I really like the brown and pink, just beautiful
oh I just love it! probably because I just love pink and chocolate! well done...wish I had some sewing mojo back!
Corrie;)
Absolutely beautiful cathy, can't wait to see pictures of the whole thing. Love the pink/chocolate combo.
Hi Cathy! I thought I would stop by and say hello - hello! I think picking fabrics is definitely an art, and I adore your hand quilting! I grumblegrumble with my mini quilts, I can't imagine hand quilting a full sized quilt!
